My favorite Spanish word is “sonrisa.”
It is translated into English as “smile.”
It is my favorite Spanish word because “sonrisa” reminds me of the English word “sunrise.”
And a sunrise reminds me of a smile.
You might be thinking, “Trevor, that’s a strange word to be writing about today because #1 it’s the first day back to school from winter break and #2 it was a morning of thunder, wind, rain and cold temperatures instead of a peaceful, beautiful sunrise.”
In one way, you would be right.
But I wish you could have seen the 4th grade hallway at my school this morning.
At 7 AM, it began filling up with 9 and 10 year olds.
And they were smiling.
They were each an individual sunrise for me.
Sonrisas.
“Mr. Barton, I really missed you over winter break,” said Daniel as he sat down in front of my classroom door. “Know what? I decided I’m going to write a book when I get older. It’s going to be about my 4th grade teacher. It’s going to be about you.”
That put a sunrise/smile/sonrisa on my face.
And in my heart.
What a good way to begin 2022.
