Small Space - A Fibonacci Poem

Happy 2024!

Here’s a poem for New Years Day.


I wrote it in the Fibonacci form, as I write most of my poems in the rhythm of the Fibonacci sequence.


I love the Fibonacci sequence - 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21... 


Do you see the pattern? 


If you graph those numbers, it creates a swirl you can find in a conch shell by the sea, a pine cone in the woods, or a sunflower.


You can find that swirl in nature, architecture, visual art, music and even literature.


Of course, literature is my favorite place to find it.


Some people call the Fibonacci swirl God’s blueprint, because it is so beautiful, ingenious and wonderful in the natural world around us.


I love that.


I look for it everywhere.


My poem is called Small Space.


May we find and nurture the small spaces between us in 2024



We

stand

closely,

side by side.

You reach out for me

and take my hand inside of yours.

 

Our fingers intertwine and our palms make a small space.

 

This space is warm in the midst of the deep snow that covers the frozen ground of Point Hope,

 

is warm against the icy wind that blows off the rocking waters of the Chukchi Sea.

 

“Life is in these small spaces between us,” you whisper.

 

We stand quietly hand in hand,

holding the small space

between us

holding

warm 

hands.
