Notes from public school - day 58

This morning, my class watched the last 15 minutes of the movie Coco to help them think about the personal narrative stories they’re writing.

Do you know the movie?

It’s wonderful.

Here is the plot according to Disney/Pixar:

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

In the last moments of the story, Miguel sings a song to his great grandmother Coco to help her remember her father, who was Hector.

As he sang on my Promethean Board, my students sang along with him.

It was a beautiful moment.

Astonishingly so.

Their voices were so soft, sweet and sincere.

Here are the words of the song:

Remember me
Though I have to say goodbye
Remember me
Don't let it make you cry
For ever if I'm far away
I hold you in my heart
I sing a secret song to you
Each night we are apart
Remember me
Though I have to travel far
Remember me
Each time you hear a sad guitar
Know that I'm with you
The only way that I can be
Until you're in my arms again
Remember me

Que nuestra canción no deje de latir
Solo con tu amor yo puedo existir (recuérdame)
Que nuestra canción no deje de latir
Solo con tu amor yo puedo existir (recuérdame)
Si en tu mente vivo estoy (recuérdame)
Mis sueños yo te doy
Te llevo en mi corazon
Y te acompañaré
Unidos en nuestra canción
Contigo ahi estaré
Recuérdame
Si sola crees estar
Recuérdame
Y mi cantar te irá a abrazar
Aun en la distancia
Nunca vayas…

Who were they remembering as they sang the song?

Ah, the wonder of it all.
