Galileo the Wonderer
“I
do
not feel
obliged to
believe the same God
who has endowed us with senses,
reason, intellect has intended us to forgo
their use. If the ancient philosophers had seen what we see, they
would have judged as we judge.” The Church judged diff’rently, brought him before the Inquisition.
He was tried and found guilty of heresy. Namely
for having held and believed a
doctrine which is false,
contrary
to divine
Holy
writ.
Locked
in
his house
under guard,
the stars in his eyes
went out. He who could see went blind.
Truth
lives.
Three hundred
fifty-nine years passed,
he was sentenced, he was pardoned
by the Church. His blind eyes opened the eyes of others.
The wonder of his genius, a star that guides us still.
