Notes from public school - Day 57

If you know me, then you know I love to write.

Writing is the way I explore.

Writing is the way I understand.

I write therefore I am.

So I love to teach writing.

I've been teaching my students how to create character.

We use 4 Post-It Notes and write the characters Wants/Needs, Likes/Dislikes, and Description on 3 of them.

We write the Plot of the story on the 4th.

We sketch the character.

We name the character.

Then we write.

I created a character named Be the Beagle.

You can see his Post-It Note definition in the picture below.

Here is his story.

Be the Beagle by Trevor Scott Barton.

Bark! Bark! Meow! Meow! There are so many dogs and cats around me. It's crowded in here. I'm at a place called the Humane Society. They're trying to help me here, but I'm ready to have a home. Many families have adopted other dogs, but no family has adopted me. I wish someone would choose me. I wish someone would take me...home.
Here comes a family now. "We're the Bartons," they say. "We want to adopt a dog. But there are so many dogs here. How can we choose?"
I close my big brown eyes. "Oh, please adopt me. Please," I think. I open my big brown eyes and look at them. They look at me.
They choose me. My tail is wagging! They have a little house inside of their house for me. It's so quiet and comfortable. I'm so happy.
       “Hey,” said Mr. Barton.
       Look.
       Be is smiling!"
       And I am.

It's a small story with a big heart.

Fallyn dropped by at the end of the day and handed me a picture.

"I love Be the Beagle," she said.

"I made a picture of him for you."

I am smiling.
