from trevor’s encyclopedia of lost and beautiful things

"Why are you up so early, mi cariño?

It’s still dark outside.

Are you okay?"

"I’m just thinking of stories I remember," he answered.

"I'm wondering.

How can you see injustice and fight against it without giving up your commitment to help and to heal?"

"Sometimes the most caring doctor has to cut away the diseased part of the body to bring help and healing to the rest of it.

Sometimes a part of the body has to die for the rest of it to live," she answered.

"I see," he said.

"But I worry that we’re destroying innocent lives as we cut away the guilty ones who’ve brought so much pain and suffering to the people and to the land.”

"You have such good eyes and such a good heart," she whispered.

She slowly turned him toward her.

With her free hand she untied her robe.

It fell open beside her.

Sometimes, you didn’t have to choose between ammunition or medicine.

Sometimes, the only choice was love.
