from The Brothers Karamazov
by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
“This is what I think of you, you will go forth from these walls, but you will live like a monk in the world. You will have many enemies, but even your foes will love you. Life will bring you many misfortunes, but you will find your happiness in them, and will bless life and will make others bless it - which is what matters most. Well, that is your character.”
the little monk learned there are four foundational forces in the universe that can be explained by physics
they hold everything together
they tear everything apart
they create order
they cause chaos
one is the gravitational force
it keeps planets in order around their suns and our feet firmly planted on the earth
two is the electromagnetic force
it brings us electricity, information and connection, and it underlies the mighty power of lightning and the gentle touch of the human hand
three is the weak force
it makes stars shine and gives us nuclear power
four is the strong force
it holds protons and neutrons inside of atoms
but the little monk knows there is one more foundational force that cannot be explained by physics
it happens when we reach out for each other’s hands,
when we walk the road together
it keeps hearts in orbit around each other
it is love
